James Brandon Marshall, 38, died on May 12, 2023 at Memorial Hermann SW Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was born on May 25, 1984 in Houston, TX, the son of Cynthia Marshall and William A. Marshall, Jr. He is survived by his parents, Cynthia and William; and stepmother, Kimberly Marshall; grandmothers, Mary Lou Langston and Marjorie Faye Marshall; grandfather, Leon Davis; sisters, Christie Marshall and Lauren Marshall; and brothers, Liam Marshall and William Lake Marshall; and numerous aunts, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Taylor Lee Crawford and William A. Marshall, Sr.; and brother, Christian Marshall.
James had such a vibrant personality and had so many friends. He never met a stranger and loved to help others however he could. James' number one passion in life was motocross racing. He grew up in Pearland and Dickinson, Texas and began riding motorcycles at the age of 7. He practiced and trained until he performed well enough to ride for Team Green Kawasaki and then later for Honda of Houston during his amateur career. Ending his amateur career and beginning his professional career in 2003, James landed a professional ride on Team Maestro Suzuki, then onto the Bardwell Yamaha Racing Team, ending with a ride on the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing Team. With amateur and professional career achievements like winning the “100% Award”, the 12-13 stock class at Lake Whitney’s Spring National in 1997 and the 250B Stock & Modified Classes at the Florida Mini Olympics Championship in 2000, as well as being a test rider for Dirt Rider Magazine in 2004 and placing 14th in the 125ESX class at the Indianapolis SX on February 12th, 2005.
On February 11, 2006, he was injured at the San Diego SX in California. It was a life changing injury resulting in quadriplegia and ended his racing career. But, that did not stop his enthusiasm to support the motocross industry by promoting and sponsoring racing events, like the OUTLAW452.com AMA Main Event Series. He also started the JamesMarshallProject, whose mission was to provide support and assistance to individuals with traumatic brain and spinal injuries. And when time allowed, James would hold annual James Marshall Ride Day events for teaching and training young upcoming racers the skills of motocross racing.
James passed away peacefully in the hospital May 12, 2023, with family and friends by his side. He left us with a big smile on his face.
James, we miss you and love you always. Your life was a blessing.
